Dr. David Lyman, a plastic surgeon, is in his office making notes of his latest patient's surgical complications. He then hears a noise, and finds Cromartie looking at one of his patients' files. Cromartie then demands Lyman to perform reconstructive surgery on him.

Elsewhere, John is still upset over the suicide of his schoolmate as seen in an earlier episode. Though Sarah tries to get him to talk about it, John remains withdrawn, and he reacts coldly to Cameron when she interrupts them. Cameron informs them that Cromartie has followed them through time after watching news footage of their arrival from 1999: in the background within the picture was Cromartie's endoskull. It is implied in Cameron's response to John that she killed an anchorman to obtain the KZPZ video footage. Cameron believes Cromartie has something to do with a shipment of refined coltan being forced to rerout from Oakland to the Los Angeles port after an arson took place at the port of Oakland, as it is a key ingredient needed to construct the current Terminators, and so Cromartie may need it to repair himself. Sarah desires to flee to the south across the border, but John proposes to take the aggressive approach to hunt down Cromartie this time because he is tired of running. She concedes and the trio prepare themselves to hunt down the coltan shipment.

At the Los Angeles port, they watch men load the coltan. The three plant C-4, making a trap for their intended prey. Cameron confirms the crew is human, and after taking out a guard who finds them, a truck loaded with the coltan leaves the port. John realizes that the truck's occupants have stolen the coltan when he suddenly discovers a number of bound and gagged workers stripped of their uniforms lying unconscious.

After they follow the vehicle to a warehouse, a fourth man named Carter enters and tell his three men to leave. Carter is revealed to be a Terminator after grabbing and moving a crate of the alloy effortlessly into a truck, a feat that went unnoticed by his men. However, Cameron informs Sarah and John that although Carter is a Terminator, he is not Cromartie: the endoskeletal structures of the two do not match since Carter is too short. Cameron also mentions that coltan has a much higher heat resistance than Titanium (a previous ingredient used for the Terminators), thus making the current Terminators much more durable.

Agent Ellison arrives at Dr. Lyman's clinic after receiving an LAPD report that features the same strange blood-like substance found at the scene. He goes into the operating room and finds Dr. Lyman dead on the ground. Ellison and a detective look at the clinic's video footage, and sees a man leaving Lyman's clinic after his death, whose face matches that of an unemployed actor and Lyman's former client, George Lazlo.

At the warehouse, John wants to blow up Carter and the truck containing the coltan using the C-4, but Sarah overrules him and decides to leave the warehouse since they are outnumbered and Cromartie is not involved in this plot. John objects because the coltan will be used to create future enemy units. He proposes to go inside and plant his cellphone as a tracking device so that they'll know where the coltan shipment will go. Sarah overrules him again and leaves with Cameron. While Cameron informs Sarah that the coltan shipment will produce 530 Terminator units, John climbs into the warehouse's window and plants his cellphone on one of the crates in the truck. Before he can leave, Carter's men return and lock up the truck, with John and one of the men, Mike, inside. One of Carter's men finds Sarah and Cameron, but Sarah knocks the man unconscious before he can make a move. Sarah and Cameron track John's cellphone online, but loses the signal when the cellphone falls and breaks. Mike notices the cellphone, but is then struck unconscious with a piece of coltan by John. John picks the lock but cannot remove it from the chains.

In an FBI holding room, Ellison is interrogating Lazlo to see if he had anything to do with Dr. Lyman's death. He takes a blood sample from him. After Lazlo returns home, he hears a knock on his door. He is shocked at seeing a man with a face identical to his own. Cromartie grabs Lazlo by the neck, and compares their features in a mirror. Satisfied that they are identical, Cromartie imitates Lazlo's screaming cry and smashes his head against the mirror, killing him.

Meanwhile, Sarah and Cameron interrogate Carter's henchman after he wakes up. After Sarah makes some threats, she cuts the henchman's bonds and tells him that he can go if he can get past Cameron. Minutes later, they are driving to the McGuire Gunnery Range, heading to the Depot 37 military base. The man doesn't know what Carter is doing there; he was hired to do the clean up at the warehouse. After getting every information they need, Sarah and Cameron leave the man in the middle of a minefield, preventing any attempt he would make to warn Carter and his men.

Ellison debriefs his boss and colleagues about his case. Agent Stewart notes that Lazlo's blood doesn't match the sample they obtained from Lyman's clinic. Ellison believes someone may have forced the doctor to perform surgery to make himself look like Lazlo. Simpson states there should have been scars and bruising. Ellison suggests that he used the clinic's hyperbaric system to speed up healing and makeup. But Stewart says no surgery was done because there is no change in the clinic's anesthesia levels, and without anesthesia it would have been impossible for someone to withstand the pain of a 5 hour facial surgery. Ellison's boss realizes Ellison is going nowhere with this case and leaves.

At Depot 37, after the truck has entered a bomb shelter, John gets out of the truck and sees Carter suddenly killing his two men. He then closes the shelter's blast doors, faces toward it and enters stand-by mode since he has completed his mission. John is now terrified of being in the same room with Carter. Later, Mike regains consciousness and approaches John with a gun. John tells him that Carter killed the two other men. Mike approaches Carter and threatens him. When Carter does not respond, Mike pushes him to the ground. Carter reactivates, grabs Mike's neck, kills him, and goes into stand-by mode again.

Sarah and Cameron arrive at Depot 37. She reveals that this factory will be the place where she and many others will be built. Coltan will be a very rare metallic ore in the future, since most of it will be destroyed by Skynet's bombs on Judgment Day. Thus, Carter is stockpiling coltan in the bomb shelter where it will be safe.

Inside the bomb shelter, John uses a phone inside in an attempt to contact Sarah. After Sarah receives John's call, she tells him that once the door is open, he should run, and Cameron will handle Carter. John tries to open the blast doors, but he needs a key to open them. Unfortunately, the key is around Carter's neck. John, terrified, manages to get it without reactivating the killing machine. After the blast doors open, Cameron engages in combat with Carter, and John starts the truck to drive it out. Then Carter starts pushing the vehicle back from the front, but Sarah shoots him in the face with her shotgun a couple times, briefly disabling it. The truck drives over his body, and Cameron locks him inside the shelter.

Ellison arrives at Lazlo's apartment, and warns him that someone might attempt to steal the actor's identity. However, not knowing that Lazlo is already dead and whom he's talking to now is the impostor, Ellison gives Cromartie his card, then leaves.

Cameron races the truck over a cliff, sending the coltan shipment into the ocean so that Skynet won't be able to use it in the future. Back home, John goes to finish his homework, and is shaken by the ordeals he endured after witnessing Carter executing his men and he himself was almost killed. In her room, Cameron uncovers a piece of coltan she took and looks at it curiously...
